Naming your puppy based on the characteristics of his breed

There are certain characteristics associated with different breeds – size, disposition, even the jobs they do. Below, we’ve listed several popular breeds with some of their most distinctive qualities, along with several names suggestions to get YOUR creative juices flowing.

ALASKAN MALAMUTE
Affectionate, loyal and excellent watchdogs, Alaskan Malamutes play well with others (especially children) and are surprisingly good as indoor companions. . Suggestions: Babylove, Kinderleiber (child lover in German), Tundra (the frozen wasteland), Rolex the Ultimate Watch Dog

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD
Active dogs who enjoy their exercise, Australian Shepherds are goodnatured and devoted to their families, but wary with strangers. Suggestions: Sportshound, Mel Gibson or Mad Max (Australian actor and famous film role), Ozzie (slang for Australian)

BASSET HOUND
Lovely and more lively than their “hang dog expressions” suggest, Basset Hounds are sweet companions and extremely affectionate, always ready to sniff out a good time with children and family members. Suggestions: Sniffer, Nosy Rosy, Speedball, Droopy (for his ears)

BEAGLE
Small in stature, but big on intelligence and affection, Beagles are wonderful companions for any sized family and, thanks to their short coat, easy to care for. Suggestions: E-Z Breezy, Happy-Go-Lucky, HMS Beagle (the name of the ship Charles Darwin used to sail to the Galapogos Islands)

BEARDED COLLIE
(also Highland Collie Unlike the more familiar collie, the Bearded Collie is a medium-sized dog with long, shaggy hair. (Collie is the Scottish word for dogs that herd sheep, not the name of a breed). Despite their winsome good looks, “Beardies” make excellent guard dogs. They’re smart and energetic, adding plenty of life to any household. Suggestions: Bounce, Shaggy ‘Do, The Bearded Lady (Lady, for short)

BORDER COLLIE
Quick to learn and eager to please, Border Collies are affectionate with friends and family, cautious with strangers, and superb at herding sheep and livestock. Devoted to their humans, these beautiful dogs are bright and alert and make extremely effective watchdogs. Suggestions: Eager Beaver, Sheepish (excellent for a more shy dog), Borderline

BOXER
Boxers have courageous hearts and are the picture of discipline, except when then let loose and play...which they love to do. Fearless when defending their property and people, Boxers are gentle with children and tough on intruders.. Suggestions: Joe Frazier, Ali, Blunt (referring to his muzzle and straightforward personality), Gentle Ben (TV bear)

BULLDOG
Rugged on the outside, but all heart on the inside, Bulldogs are known for their loyalty and courage. Gentle, affectionate and loving Suggestions: Sturdy Gertie, Bruiser, Winston Churchill (for English Bulldogs), Batman (for French Bulldogs with their big ears), Edward G. Robinson (American Bulldog)

CHIHUAHUA
Surprisingly solitary for a “pack animal,” Chihuahuas are more attached to their human family than other dogs. They don’t like people they don’t know and, though small, have no problem standing up to strangers, intruders, and even Great Danes! Suggestions: Braveheart, Sasquatch (the Abominable Snowman), Handful, Corazon (heart in Spanish)

CHOW CHOW.
Because of their size and possessive attitude towards the things (and people) they love, Chows are often misunderstood as aggressive, difficult dogs. In fact, they’re loyal and loving, with a charming wrinkled face and beautiful coat. Suggestions: Little Bear, Rip Van Wrinkles, Lion King/Lion Queen, Chow Down

COCKER SPANIEL
(American and English) Filled with love and life, Cocker Spaniels are joyful, affectionate canines and considered the world’s favorite house dog. Both intelligent and alert, Cocker Spaniels take well to training, and are fantastic with children. Suggestions: Babyface, Alta Cocker (old man in Yiddish), Senor WiggleRump, Mr. Softie

COLLIE
Collies have won the hearts of humans worldwide with their bright minds, eager spirits and hearts as big as all outdoors. Friendly, affectionate and loyal, collies are wonderful with children and seniors, protective without being aggressive. Suggestions: Lad-a-dog, Lassie, Alan Shepherd (astronaut), GoldenHeart, Hi-Spirits

DACHSHUND
Tiny and lively, Dachshunds pack a mountain of intelligence, alertness and courage into their small bodies, along with boundless affection for humans. These outstanding watchdogs are perfectly suited to an indoor life. Suggestions: LowRider, Homebody, Tubular, Einstein, Tootsie Roll

DALMATION
Always prized for their courage and intelligence, Dalmatians are affectionate, sensible dogs that like lots of activity. Wary of strangers, they’re good guardians; loving towards people they know, they’re outstanding family pets. Suggestions: Hero, Starbucks (for the high energy), Dot-com, Spotsalot

ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
These delightful companions are intelligent and friendly, with incredible swimming skills. Eager to learn and willing to obey, English Springer Spaniels make outstanding guard dogs and are deeply devoted to their families. Suggestions: Jerry Springer, Command-o, Mark Spitz (Olympic swimmer), Fancy Pants

FOX HOUND
(American and English) Real ‘pack rats,’ Fox Hounds enjoy the company of other dogs and are perfect for a multi-canine household. Happy, cheerful, but also courageous and loyal, they enjoy roaming and hunting. Suggestions: Nomad, Renard (fox in French), Buddy

GERMAN SHEPHERD
German Shepherds are versatile hardworkers and have trained successfully to be guard dogs, police dogs, and seeing eye dogs for people with visual impairments. As loving as they are intelligent, Shepherds are fearless without being hostile or aggressive. Although they are “plus size,” they make excellent house companions and are wonderful with kids of all ages. Suggestions: James Brown (the hardest working man in show business), Baron/Baroness Von Trapp (from A Sound of Music), Fearless Fosdick

GOLDEN RETREIVER
With faces that beam love, Golden Retrievers are perhaps the most patient and even-tempered breed in the canine world. Friendly, curious, and endlessly loving towards children, they are extremely gentle and good-hearted. Even though they are large in size, they’re quite content in an apartment setting, provided they get sufficient exercise. Suggestions: Forever Amber, Cheshire (for the curiosity of the cat), Hassock (another word for footstool), D’oro, Dabloon (pirate’s gold)

KEESHOND
Friendly and outgoing, Keeshonds are spirited, mid-sized dogs with bright minds and excellent guarding skills...not to mention a beautiful plumed tail. Suggestions: The Smiling Dutchman, Abraham Lincoln (the salt and pepper coat is reminiscent of the President’s beard), Keeshunden (actually the plural of ‘keeshond’)

LABRADOR RETREIVER
(Black, Chocolate, Yellow) A sweet gentle-natured breed, the Labrador Retriever is a dog of superior intelligence and unbounding affection. Trained as guide dogs and police dogs, Labradors are extremely protective and make excellent guard dogs. Black Suggestions: Kettle, Dark Angel, Noche de Besos (“Night of Kisses” in Spanish), General Schwartzpup Chocolate Suggestions: Bon Bon, Pot au Chocolat (a French dessert), Chocolate Pudding, Buddy (President Bill Clinton’s dog) Yellow Suggestions: Peach Fuzz, Sunshine Day, Amarillo (yellow in Spanish), Miss Sweetie Pie, Lover Jowels

LHASA APSO
Lhasa Apsos are sensitive dogs with a silken coat, acute hearing and a face that always seems to be smililng. Easy to train, they make loving pets and lively companions. Originating from the Himalayas, the Lhasa Apso’s long hair is well-adapted to extremes of climate and altitude Suggestions: Tibetan Prince/Princess, Silkychops, Llamakins, Smiley Coyote, Madmoiselle Violette Dupont (founder of The Tibetan Dogs Club)

PEKINGESE
A truly imperial dog with a history dating back over 2,000 years, the Pekingese was the chosen dogs of Chinese Emperors. The Pekingese is known as a gracious host to friends and a brave, fearless adversary to enemies. Suggestions: Peekaboo, Picahu, Chinese Checkers, Snuffles (for their breathing) Ancient Chinese Names: Lion Dog (because of their massive furry chests), Sun Dog (because of their fiery red color), Sleeve Dog (because they were carried around in the ample sleeves of their owners)

POODLE
(Toy, Miniature and Standard) The Poodle is believed to have originated in Germany (where it was called the Pudel), but for many years the world has regarded this highly intelligent, extremely friendly canine as the national dog of France, where it is commonly used as a retriever as well as a traveling-circus trick dog. Suggestions: Tour Eiffel (French for Eiffel Tower), Maurice Chevalier, Charles Boyer, Fifi, Lulu, Tolouse, Trickster, Big Top

PUG
Calm and affectionate by nature, these charming little dogs hate to be parted from their family and are always eager to please. Suggestions: Pugnacious (the opposite of a Pug), Chug-aPug, Bug, Mighty Mouth, Family Man

ROTTWEILER
The German Rottweiler is a robust, powerful and loyal breed with superb protective instincts. The Rottweiler is a loyal companion and a natural clown, but also a large dog whose size can inadvertently cause problems. Suggestions: Bull (as in “bull in a china shop), Robusto (a type of cigar), Guardian at the Gate, Danke Schoen (thank you in German)

SAMOYED
Samoyeds are as bright as they are beautiful, possessing a sociable nature and an independent spirit. Eager to interact with people, these beautiful furry white dogs thrive on human companionship and show it with their cheery, sweet smiles. Suggestions: Samson, Sambuca, Chesty, White Fang, Pal Joey

SCHNAUZER
(Miniature and Standard and Giant) Schnauzers come in all sizes and ach and every one is bursting with spirit and enthusiasm. A wonderful companion for children, they have an alert mind and patient nature. Suggestions: Bavarian Creampuff (their German origin), Powerhound, Wanderlust, Schnitzelschwartz (black cutlet)

SHAR-PEI
Shar-Peis are people addicts. These well-manned and dignified canines just can’t get enough of their human companions. Extremely alert, Shar-Peis are loyal family members. Suggestions: Shar-pet, Pei-Lei, Moo Goo Gai Pan (a Chinesdelicacy), Mr. Peoples, Ming Beijing, Wrinke-roo, Droopy

SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS
Also known as Shelties, these dogs are thought by many to be miniature collies, but are a distinct breed coming from the Shetland Island between Norway and Scotland. But there’s nothing pint-sized about their courage, intelligence and love for people. Easy to train and frisky, they’re wonderful dogs for both kids and seniors. Suggestions: Tartan, Plaid, Little Lassie, Grace, Rounder, Heart o’ Gold

SHIH-TZU
It’s hard not to love a cheerful, playful little Shih-Tzus. Alert with loads of energy, Shih-Tzus are excellent guards and vocal watch dogs. Related to the Pekingese, Shih-Tzus were bred as the pets of Chinese nobility, seated on silk cushions and at play in elegant marble courtyards. Suggestions: Shantung (a kind of silk), Royale, Mai Tai, Palace Guard

SIBERIAN HUSKY
The magnificent Siberian Huskies are quick and graceful with startling blue eyes, an onyx-colored nose, and a rich, luxurious coat. Alert, yet calm, Huskies are a docile breed that truly enjoys the company of others – dogs AND humans. Suggestions: Frank Sinatra (blue eyes), Nome or Juno (Alaska), Snowstorm, Leather Nose, Kodiak (a bear), Ukraine (‘edge’ in Russian)

SILKY TERRIER
Small and spunky with a piercing bark that can wake the neighborhood, Silky Terriers make fine watchdogs. Extremely loving and affectionate, as well as intelligent, Silkies are devoted companions who love to have their long, soft fur brushed and groomed. Suggestions: Spunky, Smartypants, Lady Godiva, Alloy (a mixture of gold, silver and platinum)

WELSH CORGI
(Pembroke Welsh and Cardigan Welsh) Although bred to be at home on ranches and farms, the happy little Welsh Corgi is just as happy to never range far from home as to be “home on the range.” Fearless in the face of intruders, Corgis will guard your home like a castle. Suggestions: Sean Connery, Welsh Rarebit, Dragonslayer, Pembroke, Cardigan, Mr. Withers (the area at the top of the shoulders)

WIRE FOX TERRIER
Intelligent and affectionate, the Wire Fox Terrier is an impulsive, extroverted and lovable little dynamo. Big enough to run with the hounds, but small enough to fit down a fox hole, the energetic Terrier is a loving family companion with a flair for fun and mischief. Suggestions: Asta (the dog of ‘30’s detectives Nick and Nora Charles), Wiretap, Durham (the area of England from which the dog originates), Foxy Loxie, Mischief Maker

YORKSHIRE TERRIER
Audacious little dogs with a lively spirit, Yorkshire Terriers were once used to control the rodent population in the coal mines of northern England. With deep brown eyes that can melt your heart and a luxurious coat as soft as silk, today’s Yorkies were developed by crossing small Waterside Terriers, Black and tan English Terriers, Paisley and Clydesdale Terriers, and Skye Terriers Suggestions: Sgt.
