Naming your puppy based on his markings

KALEIDESCOPE CANINES

Naming your puppy based on the markings of his coat

What's the difference between a 3-week-old puppy and a sportswriter? In 6 weeks, the puppy will stop whining. -- Mike Ditka, NFL

Many puppys have coats with distinctive color patterns and markings that serve as a wonderful source for a name. The combination of colors may suggest ideas to you as will the way in which the color appears on your puppy (as stripes, patches, etc.)

BRINDLE
Brindle is a pattern of stripes often occurring in Great Danes, Greyhounds, and Boxers. Color combinations can include red and black, fawn and black, and black and grey, Suggestions: Alcatraz, Sgt. Stripes, Convict X (Connie, for short), Marblecake, Swirly

BLACK MASK
The black mask marking is exactly what the name suggests – a pattern of black in the eye area of a puppy’s coat. Found in Whippets, Akitas and Bull Mastiffs. Suggestions: Bandit or Bandito (depending on the size of your puppy), Zorro, Masquerade, Ladro (thief in Italian), Disguise Kit (Kit, for short)

MERLE
Merle is a pattern of intermingled colors and white hairs common in Shetland Sheepdogs, Collies, and Australian Shepherds. A coat may be merled throughout or in a single patch. When merle occurs in multiple patches (as is common in Great Danes), it’s referred to as a Harlequin pattern; on a Dachshund, it’s called dapple. Suggestions: Merle Haggard, Merle Oberon, Merle Norman, Jester, Patch Adams

SPOTTED
Spotted coats are found in a wide variety of purebred puppys, including Spaniels and Newfoundlands, and also in mixed breeds. Contrary to popular perception, the coast of a Dalmation is not spotted, but rather “ticked.” (See below). Suggestions: Polka Dot, Miss Measles, Lotta Dots, In the Chips, Bespeckled

TICKED
Ticking refers to tiny spots of color on a white background. Dalmations are the most familiar ticked breed, but English Setters are another fine example. Suggestions: Spotzilla, Specks, Ticklehead, Ticked-off, TickTock
