The 20 Most Popular Names for Male and Female Dogs

It may seem silly to get into discussing pet names, but it tells you a lot. Mankind names things, and names show the psychology behind it all -- Leonard Ashley, English professor, Brooklyn College

Statistically, nearly 80% of all dog owners choose human names for their companion animals, with only 20% selecting names that are objects, colors, emotions, etc.

As with baby names, dog names tend to have cycles. Movies like “Benji,” “My Dog Skip,” and “Lassie,” breed hundreds of “copycat” dog names. In 1999, Jessy and Jack were at the top of the dogpile. Today, Max and Maggie lead the pack. So in considering a “popular” name, consider this: will the name “Britney Spears” still be appealing when your Brittany Spaniel is a year old? 2 years old? 10 years old?

In 2002, the following are the 20 most popular names for dogs:

Following trends and being in fashion is fine, but don’t forget that a selecting a popular name for your dog may lead to confusion in the park or dog run when several owners are calling for their little “Max.”

MALE DOGS
• Max • Sam • Jake • Buddy • Bailey • Rocky • Buster • Casey Cody • Duke • Charlie
• Jack • Harley • Rusty • Toby • Murphy • Shelby • Sparky • Barney • Winston

With men, you tend to see more macho names, like Spike. We see a lot of thugs and hoodlums - their pets' names are always like Felony or Gangsta. Some guy's cat was named Torque. -- Brenda Hennen, Receptionist, All Pets Hospital, San Francisco

FEMALE DOGS
• Maggie • Samantha • Molly • Lady • Sadie • Lucy • Daisy • Ginger • Abby • Sasha • Sandy
• Dakota • Katie • Annie • Chelsea • Princess • Missy • Sophie • Bo • Coco • Tasha

I'm always surprised how unashamed men are to have a ridiculous name for their pet, like Miss Kitty Poo Poo. A lot of women give names like Pooky or Boo-boo; names most people would be embarrassed to say out loud.-- Carl Friedman, director of San Francisco Animal Care and Control
